The Reservation Farce
This reservation issue is just getting more and more deranged. The government has now decided to go ahead and implement 27% reservation. Hints of this happening were seen in Arjun Singh's interview with Karan Thapar a few days back. As if this was not enough, students from Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir are demanding their own quota. Their demand - "Either give us reservations or secede PoK to Pakistan".

What comes to mind are the words from a placard from the student protesters at AIIMS, Delhi.

"We fought the British who divided us. Now whom do we fight ?"

Damm. This is a serious issue. We should plan something out and do something. They are underestimating what is happening online. Because there is less agitation on streets this time, then mandal.

the 'own quota' link is pointing to URL it is contained in. Just check the address you had for it since currently it leads to nowhere.

This whole thing is messy and currently I fail to understand anything from it. Just one thing I keep pondering. I try associate the ideology of our social reformers of preindependence era with current age politicians. I hope I remember correctly. Earlier there were concepts of 'achoot' where lower caste people were disallowed to even touch water from well and other such sources. They would be forced to fetch water from some remote well which is not being used by higher community. What our social reformers did was to challenge this mentality by feeding water to them from the very same well that upper caste people were using. They didn't go about reserving x wells out of total y wells for individual groups. The way to remove the divide is by removing the lines. Not by placing more and more lines.

I completely agree. Reservations are a way of perpetuating divisons not erasing them. Besides the main and bigger problem is one of "primary education" which is harder to solve and less glamourous. Besides it would take more than 5 years to decide(The attention span of the elected representatives).

Ho hum. Tamil Nadu has had waaay more reservation (in the order of 72%, IIRC) than any other state for ages now.

The words seem just as deranged as the people who are protesting pro-quota. I do not claim to understand the issue, I do not take a side pro/anti reservation, it is a complex issue and without explaining it -- one should not forward any sentiments to a group of people.

I have realized that our country is full of armchair activism, everyday I get around ten mails anti reservation and three supporting reservation. Is there anyone here intellectually capable of understanding/explaining the issue? Or the world just full of people sitting in air conditioned workspaces and forwarding mails while awaiting lunchtime.
